The proposal was developed as a competition entry to design a house in Accra, Ghana.
The ‘able house’ concept is to create an adaptable family home that could grow over the years to accommodate a household of up to 11 people.
The building is constructed using components that can be reused/relocated as the home grows to accommodate increased numbers of people. Creating a sustainable solution, it uses local materials and is designed to respond to tropical climate conditions. The important use of outside spaces of family life in Ghana forms an integral part of the design and a series of indoor/outdoor spaces are created by extending the roof beyond the external walls to provide covered external space with bamboo screens being used to achieve shading and privacy.
