The Gatehouse is a two-storey terrace house within a discrete mews located in Primrose Hill. The history of the buildings go back to the Mayfair Recording Studios which was established in the 1960’s in Mayfair. John and Kate Hudson who bought the studios in the 1970’s designed and built the Mews as additional studios which were then occupied by writers, producers and artists. For decades, it was a creative hub for the music industry. A fire in 2002 resulted in the closure of the studios and the mews was subsequently developed into residential accommodation.
The Gatehouse is now occupied by a young family and had a small loft space with a low floor to ceiling height. Accessed by a narrow and steep stair it could only be used as storage space. To maximize the use of this area, Bubble architects proposed a mansard extension with a sloping roof to maintain the restricted height at the front of the conservation area whilst maximising the height internally. This has enabled a spacious double bedroom plus en-suite to be accommodated with additional roof lights providing additional height and daylight.
Access to the new level was enabled by extending the beautiful spiral staircase underneath a new glazed roof. A new walk-on glass floor area at the second floor level allows light into the floors below.
To provide much needed amenity space, a private roof terrace has been incorporated at first floor level contained within a soft landscaping screen.
The former dark studio/ house has been transformed into a light and spacious family home with an outdoor space.
